Since its introduction over 70 years ago, by Swiss engineer George de Mestral, the iconic hook and loop touch fastener has not changed much but there have been advancements and improvements made since the original product was developed.

Varieties of Hook and Loop Fasteners

When discussing hook and loop fasteners, there are two varieties to consider:

  1. Sew-On – relies on a sewist to adhere the hook and loop onto a piece of sewable material using the selvage of the product. Typically found in bags, luggage, and canvas.
  2. Pressure Sensitive – sold with a paper backing used to protect the adhesive, adhesive backed hook and loop is used commonly to adhere items to vinyl or glass substrates.
